ECO-JEWELRY

Throughout history, jewelry has held a special place in the fabric of human culture . Humans have always used the beauty of natural objects to decorate their bodies and express themselves. The first evidence of jewelry came from the people in Africa. Perforated beads made from snail shells have been found dating to 75,000 years ago at Blombos Cave, South Africa. In Kenya, at Enkapune Ya Muto, beads made from perforated ostrich egg shells have been dated to more than 40,000 years ago. Outside of Africa, Cro-Magnons humans had crude necklaces and bracelets of bone, teeth, berries, and stone hung on pieces of string or animal sinew, as well as pieces of carved bone - likely used to secure clothing together. In southern Russia, carved bracelets made of Mammoth Tusk have been found. Closer to home, the Hohokam Culture of present-day southern Arizona employed a wide variety of natural items to adorn themselves, including shells or mother of pearl pieces.

Architect, Interior Designer, and Artist Nohrita Campos, is the Designer of this unique collection. Inspired by all the Environmental initiatives and the Earth Stewardship programs of RAVENS-WAY WILD JOURNEYS, she felt compelled to participate. Lending her artistry, creativity, perfectionism, and ancient skills and traditions, Nohrita contributes to the ADOPT A TREE program by donating these unique, natural, hand-made necklaces. In her Atelier (studio) in Chile, she manages a team of dedicated artisans (Ermecita, Emilce & Marcelo) who share their native Peruvian, Colombian, and Chilean expertise in gathering, selecting, sun-drying, toasting, piercing, stranding, and carefully preparing the natural raw materials. The linen, cotton, and hemp used are coated with wax to make them especially resistant to water, fading, and general wear and tear.

Nohrita has enthusiastically passed down her Macrame and Crochet expertise to her daughter Claudia, sharing the time-honored, hand-made techniques necessary to craft these beautiful items. The result is an artful and unique blend of Nature’s gifts and imagination. These handmade necklaces of different shapes, sizes, colors, and compositions are a great “green” alternative to the repetitive and impersonal mass production of jewelry.
